Jordan is more than just a country with a rich historical heritage. Thanks to its mesmerising landscapes, majestic deserts, and ancient cities, it has also become a top filming location for major Hollywood movies over the past century!

Here, you can follow in the footsteps of Indiana Jones, feel like a pioneer on Mars, or immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the desert planet Arrakis from Dune.

But seeing Jordan on screen is one thing — experiencing it in real life is something else entirely. Imagine touching the rose-coloured rocks of Petra, exploring the mysterious canyons of Wadi Rum, or taking in the breathtaking views of the Dead Sea, as if stepping straight into the heart of an epic film.

If you want to be more than just a spectator and instead the main character of your own adventure, embark on a journey through these legendary film locations.

Wadi Rum Desert

Wadi Rum is a desert in Jordan, located 60 km east of Aqaba and Eilat. For thousands of years, wind and sun have shaped the local landscape, creating unique rock formations, arches, canyons, and wells. This nature reserve, known as the "Valley of the Moon," has served as a natural backdrop for numerous films set on distant planets. Some of the most famous movies filmed here include:

  • The Martian (2015) – Matt Damon struggled to survive in harsh conditions, and Wadi Rum perfectly portrayed the red desert of Mars.
  • Dune (2021, 2024) – the majestic dunes and rock formations became part of the desert world of Arrakis.
  • Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) – Wadi Rum brought scenes from a distant galaxy to life.

When visiting this region, you can follow the filming routes on a jeep tour, take a hot-air balloon ride, and even spend the night in one of the luxurious desert camps, where breathtaking, otherworldly views await you.

The ancient city of Petra

Petra is an ancient city, once the capital of Idumea and later the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom. It was strategically located at the crossroads of two major trade routes: one connecting the Red Sea with Damascus, and the other linking the Persian Gulf with Gaza on the Mediterranean coast. Caravans loaded with precious spices had to endure the harsh conditions of the Arabian Desert for weeks before finally reaching the cool passage of the Siq, leading into Petra. There, travellers found food, shelter, and refreshing water.

This place looks like it was taken straight from a film set!

  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) – the famous Al-Khazneh temple in Petra became the hiding place of the Holy Grail.
  • Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) – the city's grand temples served as the backdrop for a battle between robots.

Al-Karak is located in western Jordan, near the Dead Sea and the Israeli border. Positioned along the ancient King’s Highway, 140 km south of Amman, Al-Karak was once part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The fortress, standing at around 1,000 metres above sea level, offers stunning views of the Dead Sea.

  • Kingdom of Heaven (2005) – this historical drama about the Crusaders, starring Orlando Bloom, was filmed in this fortress, with its powerful walls and underground tunnels. It became a symbol of the medieval era.

Walking through the fortress is like stepping back in time, where you can imagine grand battles, intrigues, and heroic struggles.

The Dead Sea

Jordan's Dead Sea coastline is renowned as a natural health retreat, thanks to its unique climate. Situated 400 metres below sea level, it is the lowest point on Earth and the saltiest body of water in the world.

This region is not only known for its healing waters but also for its mesmerising landscapes that resemble an alien world.

  • Prometheus (2012) – in this sci-fi film by Ridley Scott, the Dead Sea was used as a backdrop for extraterrestrial scenes.

Exploring canyons, discovering ancient temples, and spending nights in the desert under millions of stars – this is not just a trip, it is a true cinematic adventure!
