The Countries of Indochina and Their Treasures

Vietnam. A land of contrasts

Emerald bay of Ha Long, Vietnam

Vietnam is a country where the tropics, rich history, and cultural diversity converge into a harmonious whole. Pristine beaches with azure waters, high-altitude rice terraces, and ancient cities create an atmosphere that mesmerises travellers. Here, French colonial heritage coexists with Buddhist pagodas, and memories of the socialist past come alive through landmarks like the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and the red ties of schoolchildren.

The iconic Golden Bridge supported by the "Hands of God" in Da Nang, Vietnam

Vietnam fascinates not only with its stunning landscapes but also with its diverse gastronomy. Here, you can savour the beloved pho soup and more exotic dishes made from snake or crocodile meat.

The Best Time to Visit Vietnam

The ideal time to visit Vietnam depends on the region:

February to August is ideal for beach holidays, while spring or autumn is best for exploring cultural and historical attractions.

Cambodia. Temples of the soul

Cambodia is a land of temples and tropical landscapes that will forever hold a place in your heart. Here, the majestic Angkor Wat, a symbol of Khmer civilisation, meets the warm hospitality of the locals. The whispers of the jungle contrast beautifully with the bustling streets of Phnom Penh.

Cambodian cuisine is a testament to its rich cultural identity. You can savour traditional dishes such as amok (fish cooked in coconut milk) or try more adventurous treats, including fried insects.

The best time to visit is between November and April when the tropical climate offers mild warmth.

Laos. The land of silence

Laos is the heart and soul of Southeast Asia, a country where time appears to slow down. There are no noisy metropolises, only majestic mountains, meandering rivers, secluded monasteries, and small villages where life flows unhurriedly.

The ideal time to visit Laos is during the dry season, from November to February when the weather is comfortable, rainfall is minimal, and conditions are perfect for sightseeing. During the rainy season (June to October), nature thrives in vibrant green splendour, but frequent showers and road challenges may arise.

Malaysia. Merging worlds

Malaysia is a country where centuries-old traditions blend seamlessly with modernity. Here, you can admire Hindu temples adorned with vibrant sculptures, Chinese pagodas featuring intricate dragon designs, mosques with exquisite carvings, and the dazzling brilliance of ultra-modern skyscrapers.

Chinese dragons hold great significance for the Chinese community, which first arrived in Malaysia in the 15th century. Dragons grace the columns and roofs at the Tian Hou Temple in Kuala Lumpur, serving as protectors against evil spirits. During Chinese New Year, the streets come alive with bright lights, lion dances, and dragon performances, all symbolising good fortune.

In Penang, you can savour laksa, a thick and spicy noodle soup. Nasi lemak, a rice dish cooked in coconut milk and served with sambal sauce, is Malaysia's national dish.

When to Visit Malaysia

The best time to visit Malaysia depends on the region:

The dry season (March – October) is ideal for most destinations, while the rainy season (November – February) tends to be milder in western regions.

Mystical Myanmar

Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a land of golden temples, ancient traditions, and unique landscapes. Here, stunning architecture blends seamlessly with natural beauty, and centuries-old customs continue to shape everyday life.

Myanmar is also renowned for its enduring traditions, which have remained largely unchanged for centuries. One such custom is the use of thanaka, a natural cosmetic paste derived from tree bark, which locals apply to their faces for sun protection and to promote youthful skin. Another important cultural element is the tea ceremony. Tea houses serve laphet thoke, a salad made from fermented tea leaves, considered a national delicacy.

The best time to visit Myanmar is between November and February when the weather is dry and cool.

Thailand. Kingdom of Smiles

Thailand is a country where ancient temples coexist with modern metropolises, and turquoise beaches contrast with dense jungles. Thailand has become synonymous with holidays in Southeast Asia because of its rich culture, traditions, and hospitality.

When to Visit Singapore.

Singapore enjoys a stable tropical climate, making it a year-round destination. The Great Singapore Sale from June to August offers excellent opportunities for shopaholics. Meanwhile, February brings vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations with spectacular festivals and parades.

The world's largest cave, Son Doong, is often called the "Great Wall of Vietnam." Its galleries measure up to 91 metres in width and 244 metres in height, large enough to accommodate a 40-storey building.

Cambodia gained global recognition after the release of the movie Tomb Raider in 2001. Key scenes from the cult film were shot at the temple of Ta Prohm, which has since become one of the country's most visited landmarks.

Mountain Lake Inle, located in Myanmar, is recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Around the lake, there are 200 villages, home to approximately 150,000 people.

In Malaysia, the iconic Petronas Towers are connected by a double-deck bridge on the 41st and 42nd floors. This 58-metre-long structure is situated 170 metres above the ground, making it the tallest two-level skybridge in the world.

Laos is known as the "Land of a Thousand Elephants," a title rooted in its historical kingdom of Lane Xang. In this kingdom, elephants symbolised strength and endurance and played a vital role in transportation and agriculture.
